How to replace a V215/V245 HDD
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 Minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Faulty Disk
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement. e.g. The disk may be part of Hardware Raid, Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc. A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk. If a data backup is not required it is still a wise precaution.
WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:
NOTE: The "cfgadm" commands in this document are for individual drives that are not part of RAID volumes. Please be aware that Disks could be in hardware raid volumes. Refer to V215/245 RAID Operations for details Hardware Raid.
NOTE: Refer to Disk Slot Configuration in the Sun Fire V215 and V245 Servers Product Notes for the mapping of OS device names to physical hard drive slots and to associate internal disk slot numbers with the logical and physical device names for each hard drive.
1. Identify the hard drive to be removed and note the bay in which it is installed
2. Remove the hard drive from the device tree using the following command:
# cfgadm -c unconfigure c1::dsk/c1t3d0
where c1t3d0 is the name of the hard drive to be removed.
The blue OK to Remove hard drive indicator lights.
3. Allow the disk to spin down completely.
4. Physically remove the hard drive from the system.
5. Insert the hard drive into its bay.
6. Configure the new hard drive using this command:
# cfgadm -c configure /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0
where c1t3d0 is the name of the hard drive to be removed.
The blue OK to Remove indicator goes out, and the green Activity indicator flashes
WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
All disks should be visible under format command
Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other
