How to Replace a Sun Fire X4450 Power Distribution Board.

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

TIME ESTIMATE: 75 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4450 Power Distribution Board needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Data backup not required but recommended as a precaution
Orderly shutdown of applications
Shutdown of OS and power down of server

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Ensure standard ESD procedures are followed

1. Power off server
2. Disconnect and remove the power cords
3. Remove power supplies by pressing the latch and pulling out
4. Remove top cover by pulling the release tabs to release the door and moving the fan door to the open position. Press the top cover release button and slide the cover back to allow you to lift it straight up
5. Remove memory tray
6. Remove air duct
7. Remove PCI riser boards and PCI cards
7. Disconnect hard drive data cables from the motherboard
8. Disconnect motherboard to Power Distribution Board (PDB) ribbon cable from the (PDB)
10. Remove 4 screws that hold the motherboard to the bus bar
11. Loosen captive screw at the front of the motherboard
12. Lift motherboard out of the chassis by sliding it to the rear of the chassis and then lifting it up
13. Disconnect top cover interlock cable from the PDB
14. Disconnect PDB ribbon cable from the power supply unit backplane
15. Remove bus bar screws that holds the PDB to the power supply unit backplane
16. Remove screw that holds the PDB to the chassis
17. Slide PDB away from the paddle card and lift the PDB/bus bar assembly up and out of system
18. Install replacement PDB by aligning over the standoffs in the chassis
19. Slide PDB towards the paddle card until it plugs in to the connector
20. Install and tighten screw to secure the PDB to the chassis
21. Install and tighten bus bar screws to hold the PDB to the power supply unit backplane
20. Connect top cover interlock cable to the PDB
21. Connect PDB ribbon cable to the power supply unit backplane
22. Install motherboard back into the system and tighten the 4 screws to secure motherboard to bus bar
23 Tighten captive screw at the front of the motherboard
24. Connect PDB ribbon cable to the motherboard
25. Connect hard drive data cables to the motherboard
26. Connect hard drive data cables to the motherboard
27. Install PCI riser boards and PCI cards
28. Install air duct
29. Install memory tray
30. Install power supplies
31. Replace top cover
32. Re-connect power cords

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Verify functionality, no service LEDs or messages. Verify via ipmitool output
Gather and upload explorer
