How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire T2000 System Board

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
T2000 Product Knowledge/Training

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

*FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS*

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
System Board (motherboard) failure.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

N/A

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: The non-RoHS system boards and RoHS system boards on Sun Fire T2000 are NOT compatible (interchangeable), so a non-RoHS system board can NOT be replaced by a RoHS-compliant system board and vice versa.

  • Prior to replacing the T2000 system board (motherboard), make sure that you are using the correct FRU part number. The part number of the system board can be determined by visual inspection of the part# label on the motherboard or by using the SC command showfru.
  • NOTE: After replacing the RAID controller (system board or SAS PCI card) on T2000, any existing HW RAID volumes (and member disks, including boot disk) may not be seen and need to be re-activated. For details and guidelines refer to doc 1009723.1.

1. Shutting System Down

2. Extending Server to Maintenance Position

3. Performing Electrostatic Discharge Prevention Measures

4. Disconnecting Power From Server

5. Removing Top Cover

6. Removing Front Bezel & Top Front Cover

7. Remove all cables from rear of server.

8. Remove any PCI option cards that are installed and then rotate hold-down brackets so they do not protrude into chassis.

9. Remove all DIMMs from motherboard assembly.

10. Remove system controller card from motherboard assembly.

11. Disconnect cables from motherboard assembly.

12. Remove screws that secure motherboard assembly to chassis.

13. Lift front of motherboard to clear front standoffs.

14. Slide motherboard forward to clear connectors from cutouts in rear of chassis.

15. Using the handle, tilt motherboard assembly over interior chassis wall and lift out of chassis.

16. Place faulty motherboard assembly on antistatic mat.

17. Unpackage replacement motherboard assembly and place it on antistatic mat.

18. Tilt motherboard assembly over interior wall into chassis and place it down on rear standoffs

19. Slide motherboard backward on rear standoffs to engage connectors in rear cutouts.

20. Place front of motherboard down on front standoffs.

21. Adjust position of motherboard assembly so that it is mounted on bus bar.

22. Adjust position of motherboard assembly so that it lines up with standoff screw holes.

23. Secure motherboard assembly to chassis with screws and insulating washers.

24. Tighten two bus bar screws to secure bus bar to motherboard assembly.

25. Reinstall system controller card in motherboard assembly.

26. Reinstall all DIMMs in motherboard assembly in slots from which they were removed.

27. Reinstall any PCI option cards that were removed.

28. Reconnect cables to motherboard

29. Reconnect all cables that were removed from rear of server.

30. Place top front cover on chassis.

31. Slide front top cover forward until it snaps into place

32. Position bezel on front of chassis and snap it into place.

33. Open fan door.

34. Tighten captive screw to secure front bezel to chassis.

35. Place top cover on chassis.

36. Set cover down so that it hangs over rear of server by about an inch.

37. Slide cover forward until it latches into place.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command (if only ALOM is supported run "showfaults -v" command) to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
   * If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear component faults.
   * If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, then the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
