*DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS*
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Nothing beyond basic partner training to be qualified as a Sun Service Delivery Partner.
TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
PCI card failure
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
PCI cards are hot-pluggable and require the use of Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR)
while the system is running Solaris. If customer wishes the PCI card to be replaced using DR,
the task complexity changes to 3 and engineer needs to follow the product notes and DR guide.
Sun Fire V890 Server Dynamic Reconfiguration Guide
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
*** Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues(max post does not add testing for PCI cards), Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose. If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.
See: Guidance for POST Diagnostic Level Setting on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID
1582330.1) for details.
If you are not performing a hot-plug procedure, complete the following task (1 - 12) :
1. Power Off the system.
2. Open and remove the side door.
3. Identify the PCI card that needs to be replaced using prtdiag command and /var/adm/messages.
4. Disconnect all external cables connected to the PCI card faceplate.
5. Disconnect all internal cables connected to the PCI card.
6. Pinch the PCI card retaining clip until it releases from the back of the card and rotate the clip outward.
7. Carefully pull the PCI card from the I/O board.
8. Place the PCI card on an antistatic mat.
9. Insert the new PCI card into the appropriate slot on the I/O board.
If you are installing a PCI long card:
a. Insert the faceplate side of the PCI card into the appropriate opening on the rear panel. At the same time, insert the other end of the card into the corresponding groove on the PCI card bracket.
b. Push the card into the slot on the I/O board until it is fully seated.
If you are installing a PCI short card:
a. Align the faceplate side of the PCI card with the appropriate opening on the rear panel.
b. Push the card into the slot on the I/O board until it is fully seated.
10. Rotate the PCI retaining clip over the back of the PCI card faceplate until it snaps into place.
11. If necessary, connect any internal cables to the PCI card's internal connectors.
12. If necessary, connect any external cables to the PCI card.
