FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Faulty Power Supply.

WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

If single power supply configuration replace faulty as cold replacement (System powered off, if not all ready the case)

In dual power supply configuration faulty power supply can be replaced online as hot replacement without powering down system.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Have a look and check FIELD INFORMATION NOTICE Document ID: I0666-1
Title: Replacement of defective power supplies in 220R/420R systems

Cold replacement:

Remove a PSU

1. Take appropriate ESD procedures.

2. Unlock and open system doors.

 - Turn keyswitch to Power-On/Off position. This unlocks system front access doors.

3. Identify power supply to be removed.

4. Loosen the Phillips screw that secures the power supply retaining clip until you can push the clip upward.

5. Using your thumb, push up the retaining clip until it clears the power supply.

Caution – Keep the thumb holding the retainer clip up clear of the power supply as you slide it out from its bay.

6. With your other hand, rotate the power supply handle so that it is perpendicular to the front face of the unit.

7. Pull out the power supply in a smooth motion until the unit is free of the bay.

Install a PSU

8. Using your thumb, push up the retaining clip until there is enough clearance to slide the power supply into its bay.

9. With your other hand, align new power supply with its bay

10. Slide new power supply into power supply bay until power supply connectors start to engage the connectors on the motherboard.

Caution – Be sure to keep the thumb holding up the retainer clip out of the way as you slide the power supply into its bay.

- When the back of the power supply has cleared the retainer clip and is in the bay, release the clip.

11. Push firmly on the front of power supply to engage power supply connectors with motherboard connectors.

12. Tighten Phillips No. 2 captive screw to secure power supply to chassis.

13. Check if failure LED are cleared.

Note – As you tighten the screw, the lower end of the retaining clip presses on the front of the power supply. Fully tightening the Phillips screw ensures that the power supply is properly seated in its bay.

Hot-plug replacement:

NOTE: Do not remove failed supply nor begin the Hotplug procedure unless you have replacement part available for immediate insertion.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

For successful hot-plug replacement, check prtdiag command.
For successful cold replacement, boot system, start applications, check prtdiag command.

Verify correct operation of the power supply by checking the fan and LED indicators on the power supply. You should hear the fan start spinning and two green LEDs should light within three seconds of completing a hot-plug installation (or after restoring power to the system).
