How to Replace a T2000 HDD

Solution

*DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS*

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

TIME ESTIMATE: 130 minutes

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:  Faulty disk

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc. A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk. If a data backup is not required it is still a wise precaution.

NOTE: Please be aware that disks could be in hardware raid volumes. When replacing a failed drive in a hardware RAID volume, refer to following for details on Hardware Raid operations: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19076-01/t2k.srvr/819-2549-12/ontario-volume_man.html#pgfId-1001201

NOTE: Refer to Disk Slot Configuration in the Administration guide for the mapping of OS device names to physical hard drive slots and to associate internal disk slot numbers with the logical and physical device names for each hard drive.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED:

Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

1. Slide the catch to the right, remove the drive

2. Slide the catch to the right, install the new drive.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. Identify the location of the hard drive that you want to replace.

2. Issue the Solaris OS commands required to stop using the hard drive. See Step A below.

3. On the drive you plan to remove, push the latch release button

4. Grasp the latch and pull the drive out of the drive slot.

5. Align the replacement drive to the drive slot.

6. Slide the drive into the bay until it is fully seated.

7. Close the latch to lock the drive in place.

8. Perform administrative tasks to reconfigure the hard drive. See Step B below.

9. Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other.

Step A.
    - Perform a:
# devfsadm -Cv     #command to clear all stale entries

    - Perform a:
# cfgadm -c unconfigure c2::sd30  # command to un-configure the device

Step B.
     - Perform a:
# devfsadm -v               [#command to  scan for new devices]

     - check format output to see if disk is getting detected or not
     - Perform a:
# cfgadm -c configure c2    [#configure all the underlined device in controller 2]

If steps 'A' and 'B' fails:

Step C.
Redo the below steps once again:
# cfgadm -c unconfigure c2::sd30     [command to unconfigure the device, if fails try option 2]
# cfgadm -x remove_device c2::sd30  [Forceful removal]
# cfgadm -al  #and see if the c2::sd30 is gone
# cfgadm -x insert_device c2::dsk/c2t4d0 or
                  if the above command fails run
# cfgadm -x insert_device c2
       verify the device c2::dsk/c2t4d0 is added by running cfgadm -al
# cfgadm -c configure c2::dsk/c2t4d0
