WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Sun Fire X4100, X4100 M2, X4200, X4200 M2 Training
TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4100, X4100 M2, X4200, X4200 M2 Motherboard needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
System needs to be shutdown by customer
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Procedure too extensive to fit in this space.
FE needs to consult the service manual: "Replacing the Motherboard" section. See REFERENCE INFORMATION for link
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
None
PARTS NOTE:
Note: Due to the age of this product, a new motherboard from logistics may have a depleted CMOS battery. It is suggested to move the CMOS battery from the original motherboard, or replace the CMOS battery with a new one at time of insallation.
If after system board is replaced, you may end up with a bogus PSU_fault led lit and some lines in the system eventlog due to the CMOS battery failing.
N/A

SB replacement can lead to to a serial number of '00000000' which will break ASR if the SBs are not reprogrammed after replacement. Following is an internal process to update the system serial number and part number on a replacement x4100 and x4200 system boards.
Note: This process is only for x4100 & x4200 servers. The x4100M2 & x4200M2 uses a slightly different process.
Please refer to "How to reprogram the serial number for the Sun Fire X4100, X4100 M2, X4200, X4200 M2, X4600, X4600 M2, X4640, X4500, X4540 (DocID

Caution: - The SunService account is for the use of Sun service representatives only. Do not use the SunService account unless you are instructed to do so in a procedure developed by Sun Microsystems.
Note: - The servicetool command is supplied on Sun Fire X4100/X4200 servers that have SP firmware 10708 and later.
Steps to Follow
1. Use SSH to log into the SunService account. The default password is changeme.
# ssh <SP IP address> -l sunservice
# <SP IP Address's> password: changeme
2. At the prompt, enter the servicetool command with options. The options are defined in the following table.
# servicetool --fru_update=mainboard <Other Options>=<value>
Other Options:
--fru_product_part_number (Write a new part number to the FRU.)
--fru_product_serial_number (Write a new serial number to the FRU.)
--fru_chassis_serial_number (Write a new chassis serial number to the FRU.)
--fru_asset_tag (Write a new asset tag to the FRU.)
3. Watch the output from the command and respond to the confirmation prompts for continuing the update and rebooting the server.
==========
Servicetool is going to update the mainboard FRU with product and chassis information collected from the removed mainboard.
The following preconditions must be true for this to work:
* The new mainboard must be installed.
* The service processor must not have been replaced with the motherboard.
* The service processor firmware must not have been upgraded prior to the motherboard replacement; do firmware upgrades after component swaps!
Do you want to continue (y|n)? y
Mainboard FRU configuration has been updated.
You MUST reboot the service processor for to complete this process. Allow the service processor to fully boot.
DO NOT UNPLUG THE SYSTEM WHILE THE SERVICE PROCESSOR IS BOOTING!
Would you like to reboot the service processor now (y|n)? y
The system is going down NOW!!
Sending SIGTERM to all processes.
==========
Note: - UPDATE ONBOARD LSI SAS HBA RAID FIRMWARE
The FE must upgrade the FW of the on-board LSI SAS HBA after the MB replacement.
In some cases the server will not be able to boot from one HW raid since the disks are not recognized if that raid was created with one later FW.
The LSI FW update is done with the DOS based iso image - just boot that iso image with the JRC and confirm the upgrade + power cycle the server.
