How to Replace a Sun Fire X4100, X4100 M2, X4200, X4200 M2 HBA Card.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4100, X4100 M2, X4200, X4200 M2 HBA Card needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Data backup not required but recommended as a precaution
Orderly shutdown of applications
Shutdown of OS and power down of server

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Ensure standard ESD procedures are followed

1. Power off the server and disconnect (REMOVE) the power cords
2. Remove the main (top) cover
3. Identify the PCI Slot
4. Identify cable(s), label them and disconnect
6. Unscrew holding screw if gently pull the HBA from its slot.
7. Install replacement HBA card in the slot, press it firmly into the connector and screw it.
8. Re-install main cover
9. Re-connect cable(s) according to labeling in step 4
10. Re-connect power cords

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Bring up system and validate new HBA. Verify functionality of system
Verify if configuration changes (WWN change etc) relative to the SAN Switch or Storage System are required with the replacement of the HBA.

Refer to Host Bus Adapter Installation Guide specific to the Host Bus Adapter in system
* Firmware upgrade may be required (details can be found in Installation Guide)
