TASK COMPLEXITY: 2
TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
- SL Console reporting over temperature or power problem.
- Service required light on library.
- Fans not turning.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Customer must take library and drives offline from the application and OS.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
-Check physical indications on the library for over temperature failure.
- Check SL Console for fan faults and verify which fan has the problem.
Refer to Oracle/StorageTek SL500 Replaceable Parts Catalog, PN96120, for detailed instructions on removal/replacement of 5V Fan Assembly. It will provide the Pictures, Notes and Cautions for proper replacement.
The base module fans cool the cards installed in the electronics chassis. The 2 fans are located below the library's main power switch at the rear of the base module.
Removal of Fan:
1. Read the safety and ESD instructions.
2. Be sure the customer has ended all jobs the robot is performing.
3. Park the robot by pressing the 'Open Door' button on the keypad.
4. Wait until the robot is parked before proceeding to the next step.
5. Go to the rear of the library and remove power from the library by toggling the main power switch to the
OFF position.
6. If Fibre Channel drives are installed, go to step 10 and proceed.
7. If SCSI drives are installed, continue with the next step.
8. Remove the SCSI cables from the drives(s) next to the cable access cover if they interfere with the
access to the cover.
9. Go to step 12.
10. Disconnect the fiber cables that are looped around the strain relief attached to the cable access cover.
11. Release the hook and loop on the strain relief and remove the fibre cables.
12. Remove the screws attaching the cable access cover to the chassis.
13. Remove the cover.
14. Reach inside the access hole and disconnect the fan connector from the RLM card (top fan at J112 or
bottom fan at J113).
15. Support the fan with one hand and remove the 2 screws attaching the fan to the chassis wall.
16. Not the installation orientation of the fan cables and fan before carefully pulling the fan through the cable
access hole.
Replacement of Fan:
1. Orient the fan cables as previously noted and carefully insert the fan through the cable access hole.
2. Align the fan with the holes in the chassis.
3. Support the fan with your hand and secure the fan with 2 screws.
4. Connect the fan cable to the RLM card (J112 or J113).
5. If the cable access cover has tabs along the right side, slide the tabs onto the chassis frame and secure
the cover with 3 screws.
6. If not, attach the cover with 6 screws.
7. If Fibre Channel drives are installed, go to step 11 and proceed.
8. If SCSI drives are installed, continue with the next step.
9. Attach the SCSI cables to the base drive(s) if you removed them during the removal process.
10. Go to step 13.
11. Loop the Fibre Channel cable around the strain relief and secure it with the hook and loop on the strain
relief.
12. Connect the fiber cable(s) that are looped around the strain relief to the side of the drive(s).
13. Add power to the library by toggling the main power switch to the ON position.
Once fan has been replaced, verify functionality.
