Goal
A video procedure on how to remove and replace a Sun StorageTek SL500 Library RLC card.
Solution
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
Trained on Oracle/STK SL500 tape library.
Task Complexity: 2
Time Estimate: 30 minutes
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
No robotics movement in library.
Service required light is on.
Customer has reported the library is not functional or moving tapes.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Library should be offline to the application and the OS.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Refer to SL500 Modular Library System Replaceable Parts Catalog, PN96120 to replace assembly as needed. Instructions follow:
The RLC card is the library controller card. This card is in the top slot of the card cage at the rear of the base module.
Caution: ESD sensitive: Damage may occur to the RLC card. Follow the ESD procedures in the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Damage Prevention section.
Remove:
1. read the safety and ESD instruction in the Personal Safety and Product Precautions sections.
2. Be sure the customer has ended all jobs the robot is performing.
At the rear of the library:
3. Remove power from the library by toggling the main power switch to OFF.
4. Disconnect the external cable from the RLC card.
5. Loosen each screw on the outside of both latches until the faceplate is no longer secured to the card cage frame.
Note:
The card latch will not disengage unless the red latch buttons are depressed.
6.Press the card latches on either side of the faceplate outward to disengage the RLC card connector.
Note:
The card may not easily slide out. If not, wiggle the card to keep the sides parallel with the grooves and prevent the card from binding in the grooves.
7. Slide the RLC card out of the card cage.
Replace:
Caution: Equipment malfunction: The RLC card will not function unless the connector is fully seated. Be sure the screws engage and tighten and the faceplate is flush with the faceplate below it.
1. Insert the RLC card into the grooves in the card rails located on the inside of the slot.
Note:
Keep the card as parallel with the card rails as possible to prevent the card from binding in the grooves.
2. Carefully slide the card into the slot until the connectors are fully engaged and the card latches snap into the locked position.
3. Tighten the two screws on the faceplate.
4. Connect the external cables to the RLC card.
5. Power-on the library by toggling the main power switch to the ON position.
Note:
Powering on the library automatically starts the initialization process. This includes an audit of the library that is performed by the robot.
- Verify the FRU initialization and "online" state.
- Run diagnostic tests to verify normal operation.
Note:
The replacement RLC will have the latest firmware on it. All configuration and password information will transfer over from the RLM (as long as the information is not corrupted in the RLM).
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Have customer bring library online to OS and application.
