How to Replace a T5120/T5220 HDD or SSD

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

Part NOTE: YOU MUST USE pn 542-0388 for all T3, T5xx0, and T3-1B blade disk replacements (300GB)

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 140 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Disk fault

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Hard drives in the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 server (& similar) are capable of being removed and installed while the server is running. Then operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement. e.g. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc. A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk depending on situation and customer demand.  Please review System Administration Doc which can be used if problems occur with the following procedure & which contains links to Software RAID documentation.  The procedure below was provided by engineering for hot-swapping HDDs & uses cfgadm -c so should be followed.

NOTE: The cfgadm commands in this document (and in the Service manual) are for individual drives that are not part of RAID volumes. Have the SR owner indicate whether an internal disk is under a system board controlled RAID volume or a Cougar card RAID volume.  When a disk is part of either type of RAID volume, you do not need to unconfigure the disk before swapping it with a new disk. When replacing a failed disk in a system board RAID volume, follow the T5120/T5220 RAID disk replacement procedures at: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19839-01/E21875-01/z40002269112.html

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

NOTE: To perform a disk hot-plug procedure, you must know the physical or logical device name for the drive that you want to install or remove. If your system encounters a disk error, often you can find messages about failing or failed disks in the system console. This information is also logged in the /var/adm/messages files.

Refer to Disk Slot Configuration in the Administration guide for the mapping of OS device names to physical hard drive slots and to associate internal disk slot numbers with the logical and physical device names for each hard drive.

1) Confirm HDD LED Status

Confirm whether a group of three status LEDs of each HDD, the front and rear panel Service Required LEDs are lit when the system detects a hard drive fault.

2) Remove HDD

1. At the Solaris prompt, type the cfgadm -al command. This will list all drives in the device tree, including drives that are not configured.

2. Type cfgadm -c unconfigure to unconfigure the disk.

3. Wait until the blue Ready-to-Remove LED lights. This LED will help you identify which drive is unconfigured and can be removed.

4. On the drive you plan to remove, push the hard drive release button to open the latch.

3) Install HDD

1. Align the replacement drive to the drive slot.

2. With the latch open, slide the hard drive into its bay until it is fully seated. Then close the latch to secure the drive.

3. At the Solaris prompt, type the cfgadm -al command. This will list all drives in the device tree, including drives that are not configured.

4. Type cfgadm -c configure command to configure the disk.

5. Wait until the blue Ready-to-Remove LED is no longer lit on the drive that you installed.

6. At the Solaris prompt, type the cfgadm -al command to list all drives in the device tree, including any drives that are not configured.

4) As sames as above 1), confirm HDD LED Status again

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:
Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other.
