DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?)
Oracle/StorageTek Tape Products
TASK COMPLEXITY: 2
Time Estimate: 120 minutes
For each additional library, firmware upgrade will need 1 additional hour. i.e. 1 library = 120 minutes, 2 libraries =180 minutes, 3 libraries = 240 minutes, etc.
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Firmware upgrade needed on SL500 library.
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
- All applications should have library and drives in a offline or downed state.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Refer to the SL500 Diagnostic/Troubleshooting Guide for complete instructions on how to upgrade firmware to the library. It will have all of the Notes, Cautions and Pictures to assist with code upgrade.
Firmware can be acquired from the Systems Assurance Center, https://sac.us.oracle.com/download/index.html
Loading code is a 3 step process:
1. Downloading the firmware package containing the code from the source location on your PC to the RLC card. This process also unpacks the packages after downloading to make it ready for activation.
2. Activating the downloaded firmware in the RLC card.
3. Rebooting the library to make the firmware operational.
Loading firmware to the RLC Card
1. open the SL Console application.
2. Log on to SL Console.
3. Select Tools > Diagnostics.
4. Select the Load Code tab.
5. Use the Browse button to locate, select, and open the firmware folder and file name (.IMG file) on your PC.
6. Select the Load button from the top options bar to load the code to the RLC card.
7. Select OK to confirm downloading the code.
Activating the Firmware
1. Select the Activate Code tab.
2. Select the Target (file with the asterisk (*) from pull-down menu.
3. Select the Activate button in the top options bar.
4. Select OK to continue.
Rebooting the Library
1. When the Activate Code process is complete, you are prompted to reboot the library. Select OK.
2. Select OK to end the SL Console session.
3. In the logon screen, select Exit to close the application.
Note:
Should you need to use the putty and pscp to download the firmware, refer directly with the above mentioned manual.
Note:
Recommended steps for updating from any code level to latest.
1026 -> reboot,
1126 -> reboot,
1190 patch -> no reboot
1201 -> See attached Code Install Instructions.
1300 -> reboot,
1432 -> reboot, and then up to the latest 1483 -> reboot <------------------------- Code below 1485 is no longer available on the Systems Assurance Center Website. (2-Dec, 2015)
1501 -> reboot
Should the lower level firmware be needed, a Service Request will be needed to acquire the code as this is an EOL product. These libraries should have had higher level code install since April, 2013.
Cautions from 1501 Installation Instructions: (Apr-2016)
If you are coming from a 10xx/11xx code level and have not loaded 1201 code into the library to the point that an initialization cycle has begun, then stop and load 1201 code BEFORE loading the newer code. Make sure you follow the 1201 Code Installation Instructions and heed the warnings. Once you have upgraded to 1201, then the following applies as well.
If you are upgrading from 1201 through 1395 code levels to 1501, you must first load 1409 code into the library (at least to the point that an initialization cycle begins), then load 1501 code. Failure to do so may cause the RLC code image to be corrupted, which will most likely require the RLC to be replaced. There is not any issue going from 1409 to higher code levels. See Table 1 for upgrade/downgrade rules in the Release Notes.
!!!!Important!!!!
Never swap the RLC card out to bypass the code upgrades as it could brick the library and render it unusable
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
Have customer verify the library is up and operational along with the drives.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Applications should have the library and drives in an up or online state. Have customer run a backup task to verify the library and drive(s) are functional.
