How to Replace a Sun Fire X4640 Disk Backplane.

Solution

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4640 Disk Backplane needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

 

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
Then power down the system and disconnect the Power Cord.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Remove HDD Backplane
Ensure that if system is mounted in a rack that the anti tip over bar at the bottom of the rack is fully extended before servicing commences.
1. Power off the server
2. Remove the main cover
3. Note position of drives and remove all drives and fillers from the drive bays
4. Remove all fan trays from the fan tray carriage
5. Remove all CPU modules or CPU filler boards from the chassis
6. Remove the nine screws from the top surface of the fan tray carriage
7. Loosen the seven captive screws that secure the fan tray carriage to the chassis and motherboard
8. Lift the fan tray carriage out of the chassis
9. Disconnect the flex cable connector from the rear of the HDD backplane
10. Remove the two screws that secure the HDD backplane to the rear of the drive bays
11. Loosen the single captive screw that secures the HDD backplane
12. Remove the backplane from the chassis
13. Install the new HDD backplane
Install HDD Backplane
1. Position the new HDD backplane against the rear of the HDD bays so that the holes in the backplane align with the screw holes in the chassis
2. Replace and tighten the two screws that secure the HDD backplane to the rear of the drive bays. Torque screws to 7 inch pounds (0.8 newton meters)
3. Tighten the single captive screw that secures the HDD backplane. Torque screw to 7 inch-pounds (0.8 newton-meters)
4. Reconnect the flex cable connector to the rear of the HDD backplane
5. Reinstall all HDDs or HDD fillers that you removed
6. Re-fit fan tray carriage
7. Re-fit CPU modules and fillers
8. Re-fit fans
9. Replace the main cover

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot and check for full functionality
All disks should be visible under format command.
