FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4640 Memory DIMM needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Orderly shutdown of applications on server
Full backup is recommended as a precaution
Shutdown of OS and power down of server
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Ensure standard ESD procedures are followed. Ensure that if system is mounted in a rack that the anti tip over bar at the bottom of the rack is fully extended before servicing commences.
1. Power off the server and unplug (REMOVE) the power cords (Note: CPU modules can be damaged if power cords are not removed)
2. Remove the main cover with the power cords plugged in
3. Locate the CPU module with a lit amber LED at it's top edge
4. Remove the CPU module by simultaneously rotating the plastic levers on both sides to 90 degree position and gently lift the board straight up
6. Remove the memory dimms from the faulty/defective CPU module by rotating the dimm ejectors outwards. Gently pull the dimm straight out and place on anti-static mat.
7. Ensure dimm ejectors on new CPU module are fully open and then insert the dimms into the replacement CPU module carefully, one at a time. Press down on the corners of the dimm until the ejectors shut firmly in place
8. Ensure the plastic levers on both sides of the new module are in the open (vertical) position. Align the module with the guides and gently insert the replacement CPU module into slot/bay. Close the plastic levers downwards so they are in the flat (horizontal) position
9. Replace the main cover
10. Re-attach power cords
