How to Remove and Replace Main Logic Board

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire 280R Server

TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 3

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Faulty Main Logic Board

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
System will have to be powered off for replacement of system board. If system is still able to run an operating environment, have customer perform graceful shutdown then power off system.  Though not required a full backup is a good idea.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow ESD protection procedures. Locate a flat sturdy clean surface to set up an ESD mat with proper grounding.

Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues, Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose.  If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.

See:  Guidance for POST Diagnostic Level Setting on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID 1582330.1) for details.

- Basic Field tool kit needed & either the included torque screwdriver or a tool capable of measuring 5 +- 0.5 inch pounds of torque.
- This procedure can be completed with system in a rack but it may be easier to remove system from rack.
- If possible have customer perform a graceful shutdown of O/S.
1 Power off system
2 Label & disconnect all cables
3 Remove system from rack locate on ESD protected work area
4 Remove top cover
5 Avoid electrostatic discharge when handling components

- cpu power sense cable (J3606)
- UltraSCSI data cable (J5002)
- FC-AL data cable (J2901)
- power interlock switch cable (J3602)
8 Remove three retaining screws from rear of chassis
9 Remove system board from chassis
10 Install replacement system board ensure that PROM jumper is in the same position as on the old board
11 Ensure that ID SEEPROM at location U2101 is migrated from old to new system board
12 Slide board toward back of chassis and secure with 3 screws
13 Connect the following internal cables:
- main power cables (J3601)
- cpu power sense cable (J3606)
- UltraSCSI data cable (J5002)
- FC-AL data cable (J2901)
- power interlock switch cable (J3602)
14 Replace Air Guide
15 Replace CPU Modules
- Alternately tighten retainer screws tightening them to achieve uniform seating of CPU module
- Continue tightening until torque indicator reaches 5 +- 0.5 inch pounds.
- NOTE: Do not retighten screws as means to check torque value. If torque value is in question, loosen screws & torque down using normal procedure
16. Replace Memory modules, RSC card, all PCI cards removed above
17. Replace System cover
18. Reinstall chassis into rack
19. Verify system passes post and is able to boot.
