How to Remove and Replace A Sun Fire 280R Server Memory DIMM
Solution

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Memory/DIMM Failure
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues, Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose. If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.

1. Ensure the System is shutdown gracefully with init 5 and powered off. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Remove the System Cover
3. Locate the correct DIMM socket.
4. Open the latches at the sides of the socket.
5. Remove the module from the DIMM socket
6. Install the new DIMM by pressing down until the clips snap into place. Visually check the seating.
7. Close the System Cover.
8. Attach the Power cables, run POST and ensure that it passes with no errors.
9. Check that all of Memory is being seen by using "banner" command in OBP.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Restart software applications and verify system operation.
PARTS NOTE:
Refer to the System Handbook for the specific size of DIMM.
Physical Group 0 contains Logical Banks 0 & 2 on DIMM's J0100, J0202, J0304, J0406
Physical Group 1 contains Logical Banks 1 & 3 on DIMM's J0101, J0203, J0305, J0407
