How to Remove and Replace a 280R Power Distribution Board

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire 280R Server

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY:    3

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Faulty Power Distribution Board (PDB)

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge

Removing the Power Distribution Board
1. Ensure the System is shutdown gracefully with init 5 and powered off. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Remove the System Cover
3. Remove the Power Supplies to the front, open the Doors and loosen the screw in the middle.
4. Remove the RSC Card and other PCI Cards
5. Remove the Air Guide which is located in the middle of the System board
6. Remove the FAN Tray. Disconnect the FC-AL Cable from J0102 and the SCSI cable, loosen the 2 screws and lift the FAN tray.
7. Disconnect all the PDB wiring. Six connectors on the PDB.
8. Loosen the three screws that secure the power distribution board cover panel to the chassis.
9. Very Carefully remove the power distribution board cover panel.
10. Be sure that all AC power cords are disconnected from the system
11. Remove the AC power connector assemblies from the system
12. Remove the seven screws securing the power distribution board to the chassis and lift the PDB


Installing the Power Distribution Board
1. Insert the PDB in the server's chassis.
2. Insert the power supply connectors into their slots in the chassis.
3. Screw the 7 screws that secure the PDB to the chassis.
4. Insert the AC power connector assemblies and the cables attached to them.
5. Carefully insert the power distribution board cover panel and tighten the 3 screws.
6. Reconnect all cables.
7. Install PCI Cards, RSC Card, Air Guide, Fan Tray Assembly, Power Supplies, System Cover and Power cables.
8. Visual inspect the system
9. Power On the system and ensure that a full POST passes successfully.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot system and ensure system is fully operational.
