How to Remove and Replace a 280R Remote System Control (RSC) Card

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire 280R Server

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY:   3

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
RSC replacement

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
This procedure assumes the customer is using the RSC as the system's console.

Customer needs to collect RSC configuration information including user accounts, ethernet settings, RSC modem settings, Alert types, and which of the three available ports are in use (ethernet, serial, or modem) (Note: any or all can be in use.)

# rscadm show
# rscadm usershow

Make sure the rsc software is installed on the server before proceeding.
Change OBP setting to redirect console to ttya
Example:

# eeprom input-device=ttya
# eeprom output-device=ttya
or from the OBP prompt
ok setenv input-device ttya
ok setenv output-device ttya

System should be brought down gracefully using either init or shutdown commands.
Example:

1. init 5
2. shutdown -y -g0 -i5

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
- Use basic Field tool kit including ESD mat and wrist strap.

1, Verify the system is shutdown then remove power cables from both power inlets.
2,  Optionally remove system from rack or if cable management allows and adequate space is available, engage rack anti-tip mechanism and slide system from rack in order to access the top cover.
3,  Remove all cables attached to the RSC card. (RSC card slot is labeled and is the second slot from the left when looking at the rear of the system)
4,  Remove top cover
5,  Remove screw holding card in place then remove card and place on ESD protected surface
6,  Install replacement card into the RSC slot and replace the retaining screw.
7,  Replace top cover
8,  Reconnect cables to RSC ports
9,  Connect to serial terminal to the ttya port and power on system
10,  Boot system single user (boot -s)
11,  Run /usr/platform/`uname -i`/rsc/rsc-config and restore original rsc settings
12,  Halt the system
13, Redirect console to RSC card:
         ok setenv input-device rsc-console
         ok setenv output-device rsc-console

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
System administrator needs to verify communication to the RSC card.
