DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:

Trained on Sun/STK Lxxx Library & Drives

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Power Failure is detected, but no FSC is displayed

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 90 minutes

WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? Library & drives must be offline.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

If a defective AC or DC power component, follow the steps below:
1. Is there an AC power problem? Yes: Go to TIP 1000: Power---AC PDU. (L700/L1400 Service Manual, Chap.3, P/N95846) No: Go to Step 3.
2. Have a power problem that may relate to redundant power option? Yes: Go to "TIP 1010: Power---UPS Power" (L700/L1400 Service Manual, Chap.3, P/N95846) No: Go to Step 3.
3. Have a DC power problem? Yes: Go to TIP 2000: Power---DC Power. (L700/L1400 Service Manual, Chap.3, P/N95846) No: Go to step 4.

CAUTION: Be sure the operator has placed the library and drives offline before troubleshooting library faults.

TIP 1000: Power---AC PDU *Use to troubleshoot AC power problems
Note: Be sure to follow safety precautions in"Safety, Fiber Optic & ESD" on page xxviii.

4. Have an operator panel problem? Yes: Go to TIP 3000: Operator Panel. (L700/L1400 Service Manual, Chap.3, P/N95846) No: Go to Step 5.
5. Have a problem where the client system cannot access the library? Yes: Go to TIP 4000: SCSI Interface. (L700/L1400 Service Manual, Chap.3, P/N95846) No: Go to Step 7.
6. Have a tape drive problem? Yes: Go to TIP 5000: Tape Drives.
No: Go to step 7.
7. Uncertain, run diagnostic tests on library. Refer to "Diagnostic Tests" in Chapter2, "Firmware Operation." (L700/L1400 Service Manual, Chap.3, P/N95846)

If PDU breaker trips it is likely that
- Defective AC Power Distribution Unit (PDU)
- Defective power cable
- Incorrect power source
- Defective tape drive
1. Open right front door.
2. Is power cord seated properly Yes: Go to step 3. No: Reset power cord.
3. Open right side door & power off all tape drives.
4. Turn on PDU breaker. Does it trip? Yes: Go to step 5.
No: Power on drives, one at a time, to see which drive causes breaker to trip.
Replace defective drive.
5. Disconnect power cable from customer receptacle. At male pins on power connector, use volt/ohmmeter (set to ohms) to check between the following male pins on power cable:
-1 phase pin to GND = open
-2nd phase pin to GND = open
-1 phase pin to 2nd phase pin = <1 M??
-GND pin to frame = short
Are the measurements correct? Yes: Go to step 9 No: Go to step 6
6. Loosen screw on cable strain relief bracket for AC/DC power supply.
7. Remove power cable from bottom of PDU.
8. Use an ohmmeter to check continuity of all three wires in power cable.
Is there continuity? Yes: Go to step 9. No: Replace the cable.
9. Plug power cord back into customer's outlet. Leave library end of cord unplugged.
WARNING: Electrocution hazard: Take necessary safety measures when measuring line voltage in next procedure.
10. Switch volt/ohmmeter to AC volts & measure line voltage at cable. Nominal voltage for North America = 100--120 VAC
Nominal voltage for international = 200--240 VAC
Is line voltage correct? Yes: Go to step 11. No: Notify customer.
11. Place cable into bottom of AC PDU. Move breaker to up position.
Does breaker still trip? Yes: Replace AC PDU.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Bring Library and Drives back on line.
