FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: service failed disk backplane

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

DAMAGE ALERT: Perform a visual inspection of the replacement part to make sure that there are no damaged components, connectors, bent pins, damaged packages during shipping, etc. If the part is damaged, don't install it into the system, order a new part. Handle with caution and package carefully the return part to avoid any damages during shipping.

Shut down system and Power down the server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Remove the Hard Disk Backplane

1.- Remove the server from the rack.

2.- Remove the top cover.

3.- Remove the hard drive cage

Note: Prior to removing the hard drive cage, make sure to remove all hard drives and the DVD/USB

4.- Remove the four No. 2 Phillips screws securing the backplane to the hard drive cage.

5.- Remove the plastic backplane retention bracket from the backplane and set it aside for use when installing the backplane.

6.- Slide the backplane down and off the hard drive cage retention hooks.

7.- Place the hard drive backplane on an antistatic mat.

Install the Hard Drive Backplane

1.- Slide the backplane under the retention hooks on the hard drive cage.

2.- Install the four No. 2 Phillips screws and tighten just enough to hold the backplane against the hard drive cage.

3.- With the backplane attached to the disk cage, push up against the bottom edge of the backplane and insert the retention bracket.

4.- While keeping upward pressure on the backplane, press the retention bracket against the backplane, with the pins in line with the slots just above the hooks.

5.- Complete tightening the four screws that secure the backplane to the disk cage.

6.- Install the hard drive cage.

7.- Put the server into the rack.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FE/CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot system and monitor boot sequence for errors. Test functionality of system:
1. Run the Solaris "fmadm faulty" and SP/ILOM "show faulty" command (if only ALOM is supported run "showfaults -v" command) to verify that the fault has been cleared.
2. Perform one of the following tasks based on your verification results:
   * If the previous steps did not clear the fault, refer to doc 1004229.1 for information about the tools and methods you can use to diagnose and clear component faults.
   * If the previous steps indicate that no faults have been detected, the component has been replaced successfully. No further action is required
3. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
