OTube How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V480/V490 Memory DIMM

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire V480/V490 Server

- TIME ESTIMATE: 25 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Memory DIMM failed

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution. The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge.

Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues, Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose.  If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.

See:  Guidance for POST Diagnostic Level Setting on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID 1582330.1) for details.
Note:
If the DIMM to be serviced is in Slot B Board, Please remove the Slot A Board also.
This is to address the issue "Due to Marginal seating of Sun Fire V490 and V480 CPU/Memory boards is causing hard to diagnose non-fatal, fatal, and CPU/Memory board power-on faults. (Doc ID 1000557.1)"
During installation, Please make sure the Slot B Board is installed prior to installing the Slot A Board. Please refer to the Doc for more details.

1. Shutdown Solaris
2. Poweroff the system
3. Slide the system out of the cabinet
4. Remove the CPU access panel
5. Remove the CPU/Memory board where the faulty DIMM is located
