How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V480/V490 ALOM Card
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire V480/V490 Server
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
ALOM + card faulty
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Customer needs to collect ALOM+ configuration information including user accounts, ethernet settings, Alert types, and which of the ports are in use (ethernet, serial) (Note: Either or both can be in use.)
# rscadm show
# rscadm usershow
Make sure the rsc software is installed on the server before proceeding.
Change OBP setting to redirect console to ttya
Example:
# eeprom input-device=ttya
# eeprom output-device=ttya
or from the OBP prompt
ok setenv input-device ttya
ok setenv output-device ttya
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Follow the below steps before replacement of card
a. power off the system
b. Slide the system out of the Rack
c. Avoid Electrostatic Discharge
d. Remove the PCI Access Panel
2. Rotate the top panel lock to the Unlocked position.
3. Loosen the three captive phillips no.2 screws securing the access panel to the chassis
4. Remove the AC power cords from the system
4. Locate the ALOM card. The ALOM card is installed in the fifth slot from the edge of the PCI riser board, it is labeled ALOM on the back panel.
5. Disconnect any external cables attached to the faceplate of the ALOM card.Note and label cable connector locations.
6. Using a phillips No.1 screwdriver, remove the screw securing the card to the chassis back panel
7. Pull the ALOM card from its slot on the PCI riser board
8. Hold the ALOM card by the faceplate and its opposite edge and pull up while rocking the card from end to end until it is freed from its slot.
9. Place the ALOM card on an antistatic mat
10. Insert the new ALOM card into its slot on the PCI riser board.
11. Secure the ALOM card faceplate to the back panel with the Phillips screw
12. If required by customer redirect console to ALOM card:
ok setenv input-device rsc-console
ok setenv output-device rsc-console
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Followup the start-up procedure as given by sys-admin & confirm the application running fine.
PARTS NOTE:
The ALOM card is installed in the fifth slot from the edge of the PCI riser board, it is labeled ALOM on the back panel.
