DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire V480/V490 Server

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY:    1

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
RSC card faulty

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
Cold Part swap system down -
Customer needs to collect RSC configuration information including user accounts, ethernet settings, RSC modem settings, Alert types, and which of the three available ports are in use (ethernet, serial, or modem) (Note: any or all can be in use.)

# rscadm show
# rscadm usershow

Make sure the rsc software is installed on the server before proceeding.
Change OBP setting to redirect console to ttya
Example:

# eeprom input-device=ttya
# eeprom output-device=ttya
or from the OBP prompt
ok setenv input-device ttya
ok setenv output-device ttya

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Power off the system and remove power cords. This is needed due to the RSC card getting power as soon as the system is plugged in. Removing the card with the system plugged in could damage the card or cause personal injury.
2. Locate the card and remove any cables connected to it. Be sure to label the cords for ease of reconnecting after work is complete.
3. Remove the screw securing the card to the chassis back panel. Also be sure to use proper antistatic precautions.
4. Pull the card free from the slot. A slight rocking of the card my be needed to free it. Do not use excessive force to one end or one side of the card, this could damage the card.
5. If re-seating the card then use the same card to install back into the system. If replacing the card then swap the new and old cards. Be sure to put the card on a antistatic mat.
6. Align the card with the PCI slot, the opening for the card, and the card guide. Push the card into the slot. Apply even pressure along the edge of the card.
7. Secure the RSC card faceplate to the back panel with the Phillips screw.
8. Connect the cables that had been removed from the card.
9. Connect the power cords to the system. (When this is done the card will receive power and start its own boot process)
10. Connect to the card again via serial or telnet, (depends on how the card has been configured) to make sure it is working. (If connecting via telnet be sure to give the card enough time to boot)
11. If the card was replaced run /usr/platform/`uname -i`/rsc/rscadm show if the configuration info is missing the card will need to be reconfigured.
12, Restore setting if needed to redirect console to RSC card:
ok setenv input-device rsc-console
ok setenv output-device rsc-console

Note:

Older releases of RSC software do not have the part number for the new RSC.  An error on RSC boot may occur.  See this doc for additional information:

Sun Fire[TM] V480, V490, V880 and V890 system with RoHS RSC, part number 501-7314, emits "Unrecognized SC type, assuming 5016767" or give error "unable to find RSC serial device" while doing flashupgrade Document 1002463.1

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
