How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V480/V490 Battery on PCI-IO Board
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
This Action Plan requires the use of a coin cell battery which the FE will usually supply. In some instances, the FE may contact dispatch to request that the battery be ordered.
FE INSTRUCTIONS
This action plan requires the use of a coin cell battery. The coin cell battery should be retrieved from your personal stock of coin cell batteries. If you cannot readily obtain the correct quantity of these batteries, please contact dispatch to arrange for order.

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Battery on PCI Riser Card has failed
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
1. Power server up to ok prompt.
2. Run printenv command and note settings that are different from default settings.
3. Power off and remove power cables.Remove the PCI Access Panel
4. Rotate the top panel lock to the Unlocked position.
The top panel lock secures both the CPU access panel and the PCI access panel.
5. Loosen the three captive Phillips No. 2 screws securing the access panel to the chassis.
6. Pull the panel up and off the chassis.
7. Remove battery on PCI Riser card by easing out after lifting contact tab.
8. Install new battery on PCI Riser card by sliding in.
9. Make sure the top panel lock is in the Unlocked position.
10. Position the PCI access panel into its place on the chassis. Align the lip on the right side of the access panel with the corresponding ridge on the chassis.
11. Tighten the three captive Phillips No. 2 screws that secure the access panel to the chassis.
12. Secure the top panel lock. The top panel lock secures both the CPU access panel and the PCI access panel.
13. Power server up to ok prompt.
14. Run set-defaults command.
15. Run printenv and setenv commands and restore any settings to previous values as noted in 2. above.
16. Reboot server
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot server and confirm full functionality
