DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Field training in Sun Fire V480/V490 Server

- TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1


FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
PCI card failure

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
System power off is required.

Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues(max post does not add testing for PCI cards), Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose.  If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
*** Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
1. Confirm into the /var/adm/messages and prtdiag command the PCI card that needs to be replaced
2. Slide the system out of the cabinet
3. Rotate the top panel lock to the Unlock position
4. Loosen the three captive screws securing the access panel to the chassis
5. Disconnect any external cable attached to the faceplate of the PCI card
6. Disconnect any cables connected to the internal connectors on the PCI card
7. Using a Phillips No. 1 screwdriver, remove the screw securing the card to the chassis back panel
8. Pull the PCI card from its slot
9. Place the PCI card on an static mat
10. Install the new PCI card into the slot
11. Secure the PCI card faceplate to the back panel with Phillips screw
12. Connect any internal/external cable to the card
13. Install the PCI access panel
14. Slide the system into the cabinet
15. Power On the system


OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Start the applications.
Verify the devices associated to the replaced PCI card are functional, like network or disk volume management.
