DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire V880/V890 Server
- TIME ESTIMATE: 30 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Defective XFP card
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
A data backup is a wise precaution
PCI cards are hot-pluggable. Hot-plug operations for PCI cards involve Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR)
PCI hot-plug operations are not supported when the system ok prompt is displayed
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
Procedure 1: How to replace a 10Gb PCI-X Ethernet Adapter
Procedure 2: How to replace a 10Gb/sec XFP Optical Transceiver
If you are not performing a hot-plug procedure, complete the following procedure
Procedure 1: How to replace a 10Gb PCI-X Ethernet Adapter
1 Power Off the system
2 Open and remove the side door
3 Identify the PCI card that needs to be replaced using prtdiag command and /var/adm/messages
4 Disconnect all external cables connected to the PCI card faceplate
5 Disconnect all internal cables connected to the PCI card
6 Pinch the PCI card retaining clip until it releases from the back of the card and rotate the clip outward
7 Carefully pull the PCI card from the I/O board
8 Place the PCI card on an antistatic mat
9 Insert the new PCI card into the same slot on the I/O board
10 Rotate the PCI retaining clip over the back of the PCI card faceplate until it snaps into place
11 If necessary, connect any internal cables to the PCI card's internal connectors
12 If necessary, connect any external cables to the PCI card
Procedure 2: How to replace a10Gb/sec XFP Optical Transceiver
The 10Gb/sec XFP Optical Transceiver is hot-pluggable
1 Identify the PCI card that needs replacing the transceiver using prtdiag command and /var/adm/messages
2 Disconnect the external cable connected to the PCI card faceplate
3 Pull the white locking handle into the full horizontal position
4 Pull the transceiver out and place it on anti-static mat
5 Make sure the white locking handle is pulled on new transceiver
6 Holding the optical transceiver by the edges, align the transceiver with the slot in the Sun 10-Gigabit Ethernet PCI-Xadapter and slide it into the opening
7 Applying even pressure at both corners of the transceiver, push the transceiver until it is firmly seated in the slot
8 Push the handle closed to lock the optical transceiver in place
Caution - If you pull the locking handle down when the optical transceiver is installed, remove the optical transceiver entirely and reinstall it. The handle operates an internal lock. Pulling the handle down can disconnect the optical transceiver, even though it might appear to be connected
9 Connect the Ethernet cable
