DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire V880/V890 Server

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY:    1

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Faulty ALOM+ card

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
The  card is not a hot-plug component.
Customer needs to collect ALOM+ configuration information including user accounts, ethernet settings, Alert types, and which of the ports are in use (ethernet, serial) (Note: Either or both can be in use.)

# rscadm show
# rscadm usershow

Make sure the rsc software is installed on the server before proceeding.
Change OBP setting to redirect console to ttya
Example:

# eeprom input-device=ttya
# eeprom output-device=ttya
or from the OBP prompt
ok setenv input-device ttya
ok setenv output-device ttya

Customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
Then power down system and disconnect Power Cord.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
You must shut down system and disconnect all power cords from system before performing this procedure.

1. Disconnect AC power cords from power supplies.
2. Locate ALOM+ card. ALOM+ card is installed in a slot on system I/O board; it is labeled "RSC" or "ALOM+" on rear panel.
3. Disconnect any external cable(s) attached to faceplate of ALOM+ card. ALOM+ slot
4. Using a Phillips No. 1 screwdriver, remove screw securing card to system rear panel.
5. Pull ALOM+ card from its slot. Caution - Do not apply excessive force to one end or one side of board. Doing so could damage card.
Hold ALOM+ card by faceplate and its opposite edge, and pull up while carefully rocking card from end to end until it is freed from its slot.
6. Place ALOM+ card on an antistatic mat.
7. Insert ALOM+ card into its slot on system I/O board. ALOM+ slot
a. Insert faceplate end of card into appropriate opening in rear panel.
b. Insert opposite end of card into appropriate card guide so that ALOM+ card is aligned evenly with connectors on I/O board.
c. Push card into connectors on system I/O board. Apply even pressure along edge of card.
8. Secure the ALOM+ card faceplate to rear panel with Phillips screw.
9. Connect Ethernet, serial, and/or modem cable to appropriate connector on ALOM+ card faceplate.
10. Reconnect AC power cords to power supplies.
11. If required by customer redirect console to ALOM card, and apply customer's original settings:
ok setenv input-device rsc-console
ok setenv output-device rsc-console


OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
