DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Field training in Sun Fire V880/V890 Server
- TIME ESTIMATE: 30 min
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Faulty Motherboard Fan Assembly
- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
If System does not meet the minimum conditions needed to keep system running when part removed, System powered off is required.
If System does meet minimum conditions needed to keep system running when part removed, a hot swap can be performed, as all fan trays feature a hot-swap capability. You can remove & replace a faulty fan tray without shutting down operating system or turning off system power. A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
Customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
See Service Manual for notes, warnings and precautions.
Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues, Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose. If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.
See: Guidance for POST Diagnostic Level Setting on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID

Removal:
If you are not performing a hot-swap procedure, Power down the System.
Start from this step if performing with system up and running:
Open & Remove Side Door
1.Identify motherboard fan tray to remove.
2.Unplug motherboard fan tray cable from fan tray to be removed.
3.Loosen captive screw on the fan tray you are going to remove.
4.If you are removing fan tray 5 and fan tray 6 is installed, disconnect cable to fan tray 6 & drape it out of the way so that you can remove fan tray 5.
5.Slide fan tray to be removed out of system.
6.If you disconnected the cable to fan tray 6 to remove fan tray 5, reconnect cable to fan tray 6. If you disconnected cable to fan tray 6 as part of a hot-swap procedure for fan tray 5 & you are immediately replacing fan tray 5, do not reconnect cable to fan tray 6 until you install fan tray 5.
Installation:
1.Locate slot into which you will install motherboard fan tray. If you are installing fan tray 5 and fan tray 6 is installed, disconnect cable to fan tray 6.
2.Align fan tray to be installed with its plastic guide in chassis.
3.Slide fan tray into chassis.
4.If you disconnected cable to fan tray 6 to install fan tray 5, reconnect cable to fan tray 6.
5.Tighten captive screw on the fan tray.
6.Connect motherboard fan tray cable to its connector.
Close the side Door
