PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Fan Tray Failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : n/a

TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE:

1a) If the system is a Sun Fire E2900 or v1280, REMOVE the left input air filter.

  • These systems are qualified to operate without this filter and Sun Alert 1021703.1 provides the basis for this action.
  • Please insert the comment "FILTER REMOVED" in the comments section of the ATR feedback for this action plan to validate this action was taken.
  • This system should also be operating at least ScApp 5.20.14 (Patch 114527-15); See Sun Alert 1021703.1 for justification.

1b) If system is a Netra 1280 or 1290, the customer is required to order and replace left input air filter as soon as possible (PN X6806A-Z).

In the instructions below, examples use a location of "#".

2) From the lom:

lom> poweroff ft#

FT#: powered off

Remove all power cords

3)  Open the front doors of the system.

4)  Attach a wrist strap. Place a grounded ESD mat close to the system.

5)  Unlatch and disconnect the fan tray power connector

6)  Remove the system indicator board connector retaining clip and disconnect the connector.

7)  Loosen the two captive screws to the fan tray in the following order. There is one captive screw at the top and one at the bottom right side of the fan tray.

        a. Loosen the bottom captive screw.

        b. Loosen the top captive screw while supporting the weight of the fan tray with your other hand.

8)  Pull the tray slightly to the right to disengage the mounting pins.

9)  Remove the tray and place it on an ESD mat.

10) Perform the physical replacement. The FT can be removed if the "ok to remove" LED is lit.

11) Orient the tray so that the mounting pins align with the cutouts in the system chassis on the left side.

12) Gently push the tray into place.

13) Tighten the two captive screws, one at the top and one at the bottom right side. This action secures the fan tray.

14) Connect the fan tray power connector. Lock it by pushing it slightly upwards while pressing the locking clip to the right with a screwdriver.

15) Connect the system indicator board connector to the receptacle at the top of the fan tray. Replace the retaining clip.

16) Remove the wrist strap.

17) Close the front doors to the system.

18) After installing the new FT, from the lom:

Insert all power cords

lom> poweron ft#

FT#: powered on
