How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V440 Server PCI Fan
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Nothing beyond V440 server training
TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
TIME ESTIMATE: 40 minutes
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: PCI Fan Tray Failure
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Follow standard ESD procedures to avoid Electrostatic Discharge
1. Power off the system
2. Slide the system out of the cabinet
3. Remove top cover
4. Remove any long PCI cards installed in the system.
5. Remove the crossbar from the chassis
6. Disconnect the PCI fan tray cable at P7 on the connector board
7. Pull the PCI fan tray up and out of the system
8. Install the replacement fan tray by aligning the tabs with the corresponding slots in the chassis and inserting the fan tray into the system until firmly seated
9. Connect the fan try cable at P7 on the connector board
10. Mount the crossbar onto the chassis and secure with captive screws
11. Install any long PCI cards that were removed in step 4 above
12. Replace the top cover and slide the system back into the cabinet.
13. Power on the system.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
