How to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire V440 Server Power Supply

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?
Nothing beyond basic V440 server training
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Failed Power Supply
WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
If single power supply configuration or both in dual power supply are failed system should be down & powered off.
If a dual supply system in which one is failed, one can use Hotplug replacement & system need not be shut down, but operational precautions such as data protection or user notification may be necessary to comply w/ customer operational guidelines.
WHAT ACTION DOES ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Cold replacement:
1 Take appropriate ESD procedures
2 Unlock & open system doors
3 Identify power supply to be removed
4 Loosen captive screw that secures power supply to chassis
5 Pull out power supply in smooth motion until free of bay
6 Make sure that captive screw on new power supply is completely unlocked.
7 Align new power supply with its bay
8 Slide new power supply into power supply bay until power supply connectors start to engage connectors on motherboard
9 Push firmly on front of power supply to engage power supply connectors with motherboard connectors
10 Tighten captive screw to secure power supply to chassis
Hot-plug replacement:
NOTE - There is limited amount of time to perform power supply hot-plug operation. The technician has 10 minutes at sea level and a maximum of 7 minutes at 10,000 feet (3048 meters) to ensure proper system cooling. Do not remove failed supply or begin the Hotplug procedure unless the replacement part is available for immediate insertion.
1 Take appropriate ESD procedures
2 Unlock & open system doors
3 Identify power supply to be removed
4 To access ALOM system controller prompt, type ALOM system controller
escape sequence (#.)
5 Type following ALOM command: sc> removefru PS1 or sc> removefru PS0
CAUTION - Do not remove a power supply from a running system until power
supply OK-to-Remove LED is lit
6 Loosen captive screw that secures power supply to chassis
7 Pull out power supply in a smooth motion until free of bay
8 Make sure captive screw on new power supply is completely unlocked
9 Align new power supply with its bay
10 Slide new power supply into power supply bay until power supply connectors start to engage connectors on motherboard
11 Push firmly on front of power supply to engage power supply connectors with motherboard connectors
12 Tighten captive screw to secure power supply to chassis
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
For successful hot-plug replacement, none
For successful cold replacement, boot system & start applications
