Goal
To determine the SP/BIOS revision level of the Oracle ZFS/ Sun Storage Series 7000 Appliance.
Solution
The Oracle ZFS/ Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System supports specific revisions of the SP BIOS firmware on the underlying platform server.
In particular, the 3.x SP firmware revision is unsupported as of now on the 7x10 arrays.
The SP BIOS revision may have been changed due to:
- Hardware replacement of the system motherboard.
- Unauthorized SP BIOS firmware upgrade
Procedure to check the SP BIOS revision level:
- Connect via ssh to the Service Processor and supply root credentials.
- The SP version will be displayed as part of the logon banner.
Note: Checking the SP version via other means, such as the administrative BUI (clicking on the SUN/Oracle logo at the top left-hand corner of the screen) can be unreliable. Due to a bug in some releases, version 2.0.2.16 may also be displayed as 2.0.2.22.
Example:
$ ssh root@nastest_SP.sun.com
Password:
Sun(TM) Integrated Lights Out Manager
Version 2.0.2.16 <<<<<<<<
Copyright 2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
->
Next check the BIOS version with the following command:
-> cd /SYS/MB/BIOS
/SYS/MB/BIOS
-> show
/SYS/MB/BIOS
Targets:
Properties:
type = BIOS
fru_name = SYSTEM BIOS
fru_description = SYSTEM BIOS
fru_manufacturer = AMERICAN MEGATRENDS
fru_version = 0ABMN080 <<<<<<<<
fru_part_number = AMIBIOS8
The following are relevant ILOM+BIOS packages in use:
7x10 component firmware
For all three 7110, 7310 and 7410, use the listed packages for SP/BIOS firmware
7110 (Iwashi / SUN-FIRE-X4240-SERVER Dorado 2U)
7310 (Maguro / SUN-FIRE-X4140-SERVER Dorado 1U)
7410 (Toro / SUN-FIRE-X4440-SERVER Tucana)

When a hardware replacement of the system motherboard is done, the SP firmware/BIOS will likely be incorrect for the 7000 series.
In the case where the replacement board for a 7x10 has shipped with newer 3.x based SP firmware, the SP firmware will need to be downgraded to a Unified Storage 7000 series supported 2.x version.
NOTE: Only qualified versions of ILOM/BIOS code are supported to be installed on any ZFSSA array platform.
The current latest versions that can be installed are listed in this document:
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Critical Security bug fixes for ZFSSA BIOS/ILOM (January 2018) (Doc ID 2402064.1)
Installation of any unsupported versions of ILOM/BIOS code can cause unintended operation and undetermined issues.
PLEASE NOTE: If it is determined that the ZFSSA array is running appliance kit code version 8.7.x and is one of the array types as per the NOTE below that can do the automatic
ILOM/BIOS upgrade and is at the proper versions as per that note to do so then it is the CUSTOMERS responsibility to do that upgrade through the automatic method.
If it is determined that the array type or code version is such that that automatic ILOM/BIOS upgrade can not be done then the ILOM/BIOS upgrade
must be done through Oracle support ( via a new Service Request ), OR via a Certified Oracle Partner.
NOTE for OS8.7.x: Appliance Firmware Release OS 8.7 contains functionality to automatically upgrade the ILOM/BIOS for certain ZFS Storage Appliances (See Doc ID 2285244.1)
