Goal

This document explains what can be learned from an IBM LTO serial number.

Solution

IBM LTO Serial Number breakdown:

What are the differences of IBM LTO serial numbers ?
1 drive original s/n=YN121006xxxx and replaced by YN12101xxxx
1 drive original s/n=YN121003xxxx and replaced by YN92100xxxx

The drive SN beginning with the "9" indicates it has come from IBM repair facility.

The other spare was originally installed somewhere, returned to STK/Sun as a defective part, screened and retested at our spares test depot, and placed back into the spares pipeline.

The "9" has always been around IBM drives and their repair process since Gen1.
