Enterprise Tape Data Recovery
Oracle offers not only media analysis, but also data recovery services to customers experiencing problems with any of their tape cartridges created with StorageTek™ Enterprise tape drives such as the T9840, T9940, or T10000.

The Enterprise Tape Data Recovery group can help analyze tapes as well as assist the customer in retrieving data from tapes that have issues such as:
  • Permanent media errors & defects
  • Broken tapes
  • Overwritten tape headers
This service offering is unique within the industry and serves as an additional way we offer our customers world class service.
Overview on How to Engage Enterprise Tape Data Recovery:
    1. Open a Service Request via MOS detailing the service the customer is requesting. (Example: Customer requests data recovery for two 9940b tapes) Choose the appropriate drive (9840(A/B/C/D), 9940(A/B), T10000(A/B), set the Component to Media and the Sub-Component to Data Recovery. The case will automatically route to the Data Recovery group.
    1. The Data Recovery Engineer will contact you after receiving the SR and inquire about the nature of the recovery requested, as well as supply the waiver form and address to send the tape(s) to.
    1. The customer must send the tape(s) directly to the Data Recovery department, accompanied by a signed copy of the following waiver of liability form.

The Data Recovery Waiver Form is attached to this document.

This form is an agreement that states that the customer agrees to allow Oracle Corporation to take temporary possession of the data tape(s) for the purpose of analysis or data recovery. It also states the customer understands Oracle Corporation can not guarantee that data recovery will be successful and is not liable for any data loss incurred. (The receipt of this form is not negotiable as per Oracle Legal.) No Data Recovery or Analysis can occur without the corresponding signed form.
    1. For more detailed information on this or any of our processes, please refer to our comprehensive list of processes and procedures below.

Customer Data Security Concerns?
The safety and security of the customer's data is the primary concern of Oracle Corporation.  The Data Recovery department is located in a locked facility that has extremely limited access within Oracle Corporation's Broomfield, CO campus.  Multiple safeguards are employed to ensure customer data is physically and electronically secure. Also, the data recovery process itself deals only with the building blocks of the data - data blocks, not files.  Customer data is only copied block by block to another tape and is not interpreted or copied to disk or any other facility.  If your customer would like more detail regarding our physical and procedural security please don't hesitate to contact us.
A Key to Successful Recovery of Broken Tapes
It takes time (sometimes many weeks) to recover data from tapes, especially broken ones which are missing media at the beginning of tape.  If a tape is broken in a drive, do whatever you can to splice the tape in the drive itself.  This will allow for the best chance of recovery success. Loose media that is sent in with the tape is rarely useful and will result in customer data loss.  Please contact Tape Hardware Support or Data Recovery for assistance in splicing the tape on the drive.
