Goal

How does Auto Clean work on L-Series libraries?

Solution

How cleaning works:
The Media type on the cartridge label is used to determine compatibility with the drive type. Refer to the "Open Systems Tape Drives Information Manual," PN MT9120 or the "L700 Install Manual," PN 95843, Chapter 6, for examples of labels used in STK Libraries.

The tape drive sets a bit in the library/drive interface during an unload when the drive detects that a cleaning is needed. The library mounts a cleaning tape, which is compatible for that drive type, before the next mount command for that drive is executed.  The library uses the VOLID (CLNxxx) to determine a cartridge is a cleaning cartridge.
