Goal

How to Remove / Replace the Operator Panel in SL8500 Library:ATR:1013497.1:2.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: Knowledge of the SL8500 Library hardware.

- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes if replacing the op panel alone.  120 total minutes if microcode needs to be loaded to the new op panel.


FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW

Touch panel doesn't work
Touch panel is blank
No OP panel display
Operators panel is blank
Touch Panel is white

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE
RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?  No action needed prior to the work as this will not effect library operation.

- WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Refer to the SL8500 Service Manual for complete instructions for replacement of the Op Panel.  This will include Pictures, Notes and Cautions.

Operator Panel Removal:

1. Remove both library center section facades.
2. Remover 2 T25 screws securing each side of the local operator mounting brackets.
3. Lift and move the panel enough to access the connections/power switch.
    a. Set the power switch to off.
    b. Disconnect the AC power cord from its location.
    c. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from its location.

Older Style Brackets Removal:
4. Place the panel on a suitable work surface with the screen up.
5. Remove 4 T15 screws securing the panel to the mounting bracket and lower the mounting bracket to the
    work surface.
6. Set the panel aside on the work surface.

Older Style Brackets Replacement:
1. Join the retained mounting bracket to the replacement panel with 4 T15 screws.
2. Position and support the panel near the mounting area.
3. Connect the following cables:
    a. Ethernet cable.
    b. AC power cable.
4. Set the power switch to on.

New Style Bracket Removal:

1. Remove 4 T15 screws on the rear of the panel, securing the panel to the mounting bracket.
2. Join the mounting bracket to the replacement panel with 4 T15 screws.
3. Position and support the panel near the mounting area.
4. Connect the following cables:
    a. Ethernet cable.
    b. AC power cord.
5. Set the power switch to on.

Operator Panel Replacement:
1. Support the panel in the mount and align with the mounting slots.
2. Thread, but do not fully tighten, 4 T25 screws to position the console at the forward end of the mounting
    slots.
3. Perform a "Operator Panel Verification".
4. Install the library center section lower facade temporarily to reposition the operator panel into proper
    relationship with the lower facade.
5. Remover the lower facade.
6. Tighten the 4 T25 screws to secure the operator panel.
7. Re-install both library facades.

Final Actions for all newly replace operator panels.

Firmware must be validated on the operator panel.
Firmware running on the operator panel must be at a minimal level concurrent to the microcode running on the library.
Review tape library microcode release notes for compatibility of operator panel firmware against the running microcode on the library.
Upgrade operator panel microcode when required.



OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO
AN OPERATIONAL STATE:  After Op Panel has been replaced, the customer will need to log in.
