Description

This document explains how to physically replace and install a DIMM in a Sun Blade[TM] X6250 Server Module. It does not explain how to diagnose a faulty DIMM.

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?: No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

System must be shut down.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED?:

1. Refer to the DIMM population rules section below.

2. Power off the server and remove the server module from the chassis

3. Remove the main cover.

4. Press the fault remind button on the motherboard to illuminate the LED for the DIMMs that have failed.

5. Locate the DIMM slot on the motherboard to which you will install a DIMM.

6. To remove a DIMM:

* Rotate both DIMM slot ejectors outward as far as they will go.
* Carefully lift the DIMM straight up to remove it from the socket.

7. To install a DIMM:

* Ensure that the DIMM slot ejectors at each end of the memory socket are fully open (rotated outward) to accept the new DIMM.
* Align the notch in the bottom edge of the DIMM with the key in the DIMM socket.
* Press down evenly on both top corners of the DIMM until the ejectors snap over the cutouts in the left and right edges of the DIMM.

WHAT ACTIONS ARE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:
Restart the system

Caution: When removing a server module, install a slot filler within one minute to avoid adjacent modules from overheating.

 

DIMM Population Rules

  • The server module can support a maximum of 16 DDR2 DIMMs.
  • Two DIMMs within each pair must be identical (same manufacturer, size, and speed).
  • The DIMM slots are paired.  The DIMMs must be installed in pairs (0 and 1, 2 and 3, etc).  The slots for the first two pairs are white; all others are black.
