Goal

Filters should be inspected and/or replaced on Sun's High-End/Midrange/Telco Servers, as part of a regular scheduled maintenance.

Solution

Steps to Follow

This is a general document, to be used only as a guide in Maintaining Screens and Filters on Oracle Servers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Always read the most recent procedures provided, in the maintenance guide for the specific server being worked on. Links are provided below, to each manual referenced.

The level of debris found on the screens or filters and surrounding area, should be considered in the decision of when to remove and clean the air screens or filters.

If the air intake screen collects a substantial amount of debris in less than three months, investigate the air supply system for sources of contamination and take corrective action.

If air/EMI filters are to be cleaned, take a new set on-site and replace them. Then, clean the removed filters and use them for the next server maintenance cycle(or discard if damaged).

For all servers, refer to the latest service or user manuals, for specific removal/installation procedures.

M4000 & M5000 819-2210 - inspect every 3 months clean as needed, replace only if damaged

  • The air filter is held in place on the front of the server with hook and loop tape.
  • Should be cleaned or replaced while system is powered of.

M8000/M9000  C120-E330-12EN - inspect every 3 months, clean at least once a year, or when visibly dirty, replace only if damaged

  • The high-end server cabinet is equipped with a total of six air filters: three at the front and three at the rear at the bottom.
  • Can be cleaned or replaced while system is powered on.

E12K-E15K 806-3512 - inspect or replace every 3 months

  • E12K/E15K have air plenum air intake screens, and six air filters.
  • Have six new filters to exchange, then clean the originals for the next
    replacement.
  • Can be cleaned or replaced while system is powered on.

E20K-E25K 817-4138 - inspect or replace every 3 months

  • E20K/E25K have air plenum air intake screens and six air filters.
  • Have six new filters to exchange, then clean the originals for the next
    replacement.
  • Can be cleaned or replaced while system is powered on.

SF6800/4810/4800 805-7363 - inspect or replace EMI filter every 3 months

  • EMI filters can be cleaned or changed while system is powered on.
  • SF3800 does not require cleaning

E2900 817-4054 - inspect or clean the two air filters every 3 months.

  • Can be replaced while system is powered on.
  • Cleaning requires soap and water and drying time. Plan to have a spare set of filters, or do during extended powered off maintenance.

E4900-E6900 817-4120 - inspect or clean EMI filter every 3 months

  • EMI filters can be cleaned or changed while system is powered on.

V1280 817-0510 - inspect or clean two air filters every 3 months.

  • Can be replaced while system is powered on.
  • Cleaning requires soap and water and drying time. Plan to have a spare set of filters, or do during extended powered off maintenance.

Netra 1280 817-0510 - inspect or clean EMI filter every 3 months.

  • System has to be powered off for cleaning or replacement.

NOTES

Oracle does not officially endorse any particular Vacuum Cleaner, but strongly suggests a EMI/EMF/RFI shielded model.

Oracle Canada uses 3M Service Vacuum Cleaner(251-497) with the type 1 Fine Particle Filter (260-113). These vacuums are EMI/EMF/RFI shielded, and the tips are grounded. The filter is a HEPA type canister. It normally comes with a type 2 canister, but we replaced all with type 1 for trapping extremely fine particles to 0.3 microns.
