Goal

There are some issues with the Oracle/Sun[TM] Leadville driver stack on Solaris[TM] 8 that require hard addressing to be used for all native FC-AL tape devices (including both the library and the 9840 drives). This will affect any/all CSE's who install Oracle-badged StorageTek L180/700 native fibre libraries with 9840 FC drives, and may affect other FC-AL installs into a Solaris 8 environment with the Leadville driver stack.

Solution

SUN L700/L180 with/9840fc Hard Addressing & Installation Configuration.

Oracle is OEMing 9840 fibre channel drives and L180/700 libraries (with native fibre attach).

Configuration:
STK Libraries: L180 & L700 native FC
STK Tape drives: 9840 FC
Oracle/SUN Operating system: Solaris 8 or later
Oracle/SUN Drivers: Leadville driver stack

There are some issues with the Sun Leadville driver stack on Solaris 8 that require hard addressing to be used for all native FC-AL tape devices (including both the library and the 9840 drives). This will affect any/all CSE's who install Sun-badged StorageTek L180/700 native fibre libraries with 9840 FC drives, and may affect other FC-AL installs into a Solaris 8 environment with the Leadville driver stack.

Note:
Hard addressing will also be required on bridges for phase II of this program. It is our understanding that it is Solaris 8 w/ Leadville driver stack that creates the hard addressing requirement; that's why we think there may be potential for this situation with other installations.

Hard addressing is documented in the following Manuals:

- 9840/T9940 Tape Drive Installation Manual, Chapter- 7 Drive Configuration, section "Fibre Channel Configuration Menu", Table 7-1. Menu Table--Fibre Channel Configuration #-95879

- L180 Tape Library Installation Manual, Chapter- 3 Library Configuration, section "Choosing Library Configuration Options", subsection "Port 0 Address" #-95896

- L700 Tape Library Installation Manual, Chapter- 4 Configuring the Library, section "Operator Panel Entry", subsection "Setting the Library Fibre Channel Port 0 Address" #-95843

Oracle Supplied Configuration Information

Oracle is recommending the following HBAs: QLogic 2200 (Amber), QLogic 2202 (Crystal)
But we will support new HBAs in the future and we will still require hard addressing.

Q: Current driver level of Leadville driver?
Answer
Current level is IIIf. This is not necessarily the version we will release though, as testing has not yet been completed.

Q: Current Patch level SUN recommends for Sol 8 installs or jumbo patch?
Answer
Must be at update 4, build 8 or later.

Q:What default settings would SUN recommend/support for HBA if any?
Answer
No changes required.

Q: What fcaw setting/config options ?
Answer
We do not support fcaw.

Q: For phase 2 - what bridge or bridges is Sun supporting?
Answer
Crossroads 4250.

Q: What firmware level of Bridge?
Answer
TBD. - We have a lot of testing to perform before this is solidified. Current release is 2006x.

Q: What config options does Sun recommend?
Answer
1. Configurations
1. Revision Levels
1.Test configurations shall be constructed using hardware and software of the following revision levels:
2. Host Systems (L180): E4500 (preferred) OR E5500 OR E3500, 2 x 400Mhz minimum
3. E450 OR E250, 2 x 400Mhz, minimum
4. E420 OR E220 OR Ultra-80 OR Ultra-60, 2 x 450Mhz, minimum
5. Host Systems (L700): E4500 (preferred) OR E5500 OR E3500, 4 x 400Mhz minimum
6. E450, 4 x 400Mhz, minimum
7. E420 OR Ultra-80, 4 x 450Mhz, minimum
8. Host Adapters: Qlogic 2202a, F-Code 1.10 or later
9. Qlogic SANBox-II Switch: Firmware 30351 (Mamba) or later
10. Crossroads 4250 Bridges: Firmware 2006x (TBD) or later
11. Operating System: Solaris 8 update 4, build 8 or later
12. Driver Stack: Leadville version IIIf or later
13. FCP-2 Error Recovery: Enabled
14. Veritas NetBackup: Version 3.4
15. Solstice Backup: Version 6.0

Q: does Sun have a Preferred Default Address that they are using ? or are we still free to use the next open address ?
Answer
The host adapter uses hard address 0 (AL_PA 1). We support up to 4 hosts, and going forward this number may grow. I suggest you avoid addresses less than 16 (0x10).
Anything non-reserved addresses above this should be fine.
I suggest you do something like set the library to hard address 0x10 and set the drives to hard address 0x20 and above.
