Goal

The Sun StorageTek[TM] 5000 Series NAS is capable of providing pass-through authentication to existing Windows domains.

To do so, it is necessary for the NAS to join the domain as a member server. This document describes all necessary configuration settings.

Steps to Follow
Sun StorageTek 5000 Series NAS: Configuring for integration with Windows Domains

NOTE: If Active Directory or Dynamic DNS is to be configured, this must be done prior to this step. See Document: 1009920.1 for details on this procedure.

Use the following procedure to join a Windows Domain and configure access:

  1. Connect to the NAS via telnet, ssh or a serial console.
  2. If running OS version 4.20 or older, press Enter at the [menu] prompt and type the administrator password. If running OS version 4.21 or newer, enter the password and type "menu"
  3. Press the spacebar until "CIFS/SMB Configuration" is displayed under the Extensions menu at the lower right of the screen.
  4. Select the letter corresponding to "CIFS/SMB Configuration".
  5. Select the letter corresponding to "Domain Configuration".
  6. In the Domain Configuration screen, configure the options as follows:
    • Domain: Name of Windows domain. Use the "pre-Windows 2000 name", which is usually, but not always, the base of the Active Directory name without ".company.com" or any other suffix.
    • Scope: SMB scope. This should almost always be left blank. Incorrectly configuring this field will prevent all CIFS access.
    • Description: An optional comment to be displayed in the browse list.
    • Primary/Secondary WINS: IP addresses of WINS servers. If present, these should be configured, particularly for non-Active Directory environments.
    • Keep Alive: Time in seconds before disconnecting idle connections. The default setting is recommended.
    • Security Mode: Select 2, "NT Domain (Auto UID)"
    • Username: A user account with the rights to add a computer to the domain configured above.
    • Password: The password for this user account
  7. After configuring desired options, select option 7, Save Changes. The NAS will now attempt to join the domain, and will offer the option to reboot if successful.

This functionality is also available through the Web Admin GUI..All of the options described above are available, with the exception of the Keep Alive and Scope options. It is rarely necessary, and potentially harmful, to configure these settings.
