Description

On Brocade switches, there are different re-boot commands available. This
document talks about the significance of each reboot command, and when to use
them.

Steps to Follow

fastBoot

Reboots the Control Processor, bypassing Power On Self Tests(POST).

Use this command to immediately reboot the Control Processor. This command is
similar to reboot, but skips the Power On Self Tests(POST) when the system comes
back up. This reduces the boot time significantly. If POST was previously
disabled using the diagDisablePost command, then this command is the same as
reboot.

reboot

Reboots the Control Processor in a director class switch, but reboots the
switch in non-director class switches (e.g. 3250/3850/3900)

Use this command to immediately reboot a CP in a director or an entire switch.
The command-line session will be closed. When this command is issued on a
single-CP system, all switches in the system are entirely shut down and all
Fibre Channel ports become inactive until the system restarts. When this command
is issued on the Active CP of a dual-CP system, the Active CP reboots, the
Standby CP takes over as the Active CP, and all Fibre Channel ports become
inactive until the new Active CP re-initializes these ports. If this switch is
part of a fabric, reboot the switch so that the remaining switches reconfigure.
When this command issued on the Standby CP, High Availability(HA)
synchronization is lost until the Standby CP successfully restarts.

switchreboot

halts a logical switch on a director class switch and then starts it up.
This is similar to reboot on a non-director class switch.

Use this command to re-boot the operational switch, without disrupting the
other switch in a dual-switch chassis. This command is equivalent to running
switchShutdown and switchStart. This command is not supported on
single-domain systems.

switchShutdown

    Halts the operational switch.

Use this command to halt switch operation on one switch, without disrupting the
other. This command disables a logical switch in a dual-switch chassis.
This command has to be used in combination with switchStart. This command halts
all the daemons associated with the switch, frees the resources and object
states associated with the switch to a clear state, and disables all the ports
and blades associated with the switch.

switchStart

Initializes a previously shut down switch.

Use this command to initialize one switch without disrupting the other switch in
the dual-switch chassis. This command has to be used in combination with
switchShutdown. This command starts all the daemons associated with the switch,
initializes the object states associated with the switch to a clear state, and
enables all the ports and blades associated with the switch.

Comment: I had examine the document and generally found that this command are well documented in the Brocade switch fabric OS reference. However, if you felt that this document might serve its purpose if someone do not have access to the OS reference document, then it might come in handy through Sun Knowledge Docuement search.

I felt that to make this reboot document complete, you should also include the switchReboot explanation.

In addition, you might also want to highlight that the command detail can be found in the Brocade switch fabric OS reference and include URL to this documents that are found in Sun website.
