Goal
McDATA ethernet management port issue connected to Cisco switches. The problem manifest itself as an error code "430" "Excessive Ethernet transmit errors" logged to the McDATA event log.
mm/dd/yy hh:mm:ss 430 Excessive Ethernet transmit errors
In some cases this error can be the result of a duplex mismatch between the McDATA and Cisco switches and may result in ethernet performance issues, intermittent connectivity or loss of communication between the McDATA and any management application. This can also generate excessive email traffic if error reporting is enabled.
Solution
This problem can occur in any configuration that includes McDATA management port(s) connected to Cisco switches and matches either of the two scenarios.
- The Ethernet management port of any McDATA product with the default configuration of auto-negotiate is connected to a Cisco Ethernet switch port configured to 100 Mbps full-duplex. This configuration results in the McDATA ethernet port initializing at 100 Mbps half-duplex, causing a duplex mismatch.
- The Ethernet management port of a McDATA Sphereon 30xx or 32xx Fabric Switch or Intrepid 6064 Director is configured to 100 Mbps full-duplex, and connected to a Cisco Ethernet switch port configured to auto-negotiate. In this situation, the Cisco port will initialize to 100 Mbps half-duplex, causing a duplex mismatch.
Note: The following problem description, symptoms, and resolution apply only to the Ethernet management connection between McDATA products and a Cisco Ethernet switch. Fibre Channel traffic passing through the McDATA product is not affected.
Resolution:
- Set Cisco ethernet port for auto-negotiate as this is the default behavior on the McDATA.
- Set both McDATA ethernet port and Cisco switch port for 100 Mbps full duplex.
