Goal

There are various ways to clear the log on the x86 systems.

This document is created to provide one central reference location for the various options available for clearing the logs on the ILOM, ELOM or SP. Available tools to clear the logs are the serial, OS ipmitool and the Java web gui.

Solution

Steps to Follow

1. Clear the logs connected serially and or ssh into the ILOM, ELOM or SP:

On the Galaxies (Sun Fire[TM]X4100/Sun Fire[TM]X4200/Sun Fire[TM]X4600):

-> show /SP/logs/event/list
-> set /SP/logs/event clear=true

On Sun Blade[TM]8000 Modular System:

-> show /CH/BLx/SP/logs/event/list
-> set /CH/BLx/SP/logs/event clear=true

On Sun Fire[TM] X2100 M2/Sun Fire[TM] X2200 M2(ELOM):

-> show /SP/AgentInfo/SEL
-> set /SP/AgentInfo/SEL clear=action

On the Sun Fire[TM] v20z/Sun Fire[TM] v40z Servers:

# sp delete event --all

2. Clear the logs by ipmitool in the OS for Solaris or Linux:

<ipaddr_ilom>

# /usr/sfw/bin/ipmitool -I lan -H <IP_Address> -U root sel clear
Password:
Clearing SEL. Please allow a few seconds to erase.

Please note: Depending on the version of ipmitool running, the -I could be lan, bmc or open Interfaces:

bmc           IPMI v2.0 BMC interface [default]
lan           IPMI v1.5 LAN Interface
lanplus       IPMI v2.0 RMCP+ LAN Interface

Please note: for the Sun Fire[TM] X2100/Sun Fire[TM] X2100 M2/Sun Fire[TM] X2200 M2 with the smdc option card you could clear the logs using the above ipmitool command.

3. Clear the logs by using the web browser:

1) Type "https://<ip_ilom>" in the url <ip_ilom>
2) Login to the Sun(TM) Integrated Lights Out Manager
3) Go to and click on the system monitoring menu
4) Then click on the Event Logs
5) Click Clear Event Log and the SEL will be cleared

NOTE:
