Goal

Utilizing Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) or cfgadm to add a System Board to a domain.

The procedure outlined in this document can be used to enable a System Board which is not part of any running domain. With some modifications this can be also used to replace a faulty System Board with a new one.

For 3800/48x0/6800/E4900/E6900, please refer to the Dynamic Reconfiguration on Sun Fire Midrange Systems Release Notes to confirm the server meets the requirements.

For V1280/E2900 or Netra 1280/1290, please refer to CPU/Memory Board Replacement and Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) to confirm the server meets the requirements.

Also reference Sun Fire[TM] Midframe/Midrange Servers: CPU/Memory Board Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) Considerations (Doc ID 1003332.1) for all available DR options for the Sun Fire[TM] platforms.

Solution

The example procedure below is on a 6800 server and the board being added is SB1.

The following steps are basically the same regardless of the system (but for v1280/E2900/n1280/n1290, there is only one domain and the prompt is not the "SC" prompt, but instead, the "lom" prompt).

1) Make a note of the number of CPUs on the server for comparison purposes once the CPUs have been added

# /usr/sbin/psrinfo
0 on-line since 02/11/04 15:54:11
1 on-line since 02/11/04 15:54:12
2 on-line since 02/11/04 15:54:12
3 on-line since 02/11/04 15:54:12
#

2) Make a note of the current memory on the server, again, for comparison purposes

# cd /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin
# ./prtdiag -v

6) Configure the domain from the system controller to use SB1.

Please be aware that the target SB to be added to the domain MUST be in the domain's Access Control List (ACL). This can be checked using the showplatform -v command on the platform shell. If modification is needed to the Domain's ACL, the platform shell command setupplatform should be used.

v4u-6800a-sc1-gmp02:SC> addboard -d a sb1
/N0/SB1: will be configured into the domain after setkeyswitch off/standby
DR can be used to configure /N0/SB1 into an active domain.
