Goal
Update the firmware on the Sun Fire[TM] 3800/4x00/4810/6x00
Solution
Steps to Follow
This is a procedure to update the firmware on the Sun Fire[TM] 3800/4800/4810/6800 systems with the flashupdate command from the "Platform Shell" (system controller).
The -f option is normally used with the flashupdate command, and it commonly directs the flashupdate to get the flash patch files from an ftp server.
- It's important to note that the host containing the flash files/patch must be able to communicate via the network to the System Controller from which the flashupdate is being performed.
- A simple way to check this is to telnet from the host to the IP address of the SC.
Procedures in the document "Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 Systems Platform Administration Manual"(.pdf file included with the Sun Fire flashprom update patch) indicate that it is necessary to set up the ftp "Firmware Server" as an anonymous ftp server, and gives full instructions on how to set this up. There is a time-saving procedure that skips this step (setting the firmware server up for anonymous ftp).
Here are the steps:
1) Telnet or tip into the spare system controller that needs to be flashupdated, and go to "Platform Shell" (prompt should end with lower case sc:>).
- run the flashupdate command in the following form:
flashupdate -f ftp://root:password@ip/path_to_patches/ scapp rtos
2) Telnet or tip into the main system controller that needs to be flashupdated, and go to "Platform Shell"(prompt should end with upper case SC:>).
- run the flashupdate command in the following form:
flashupdate -f ftp://root:password@ip/path_to_patches/ all rtos
Where:
- "ip" is the ip address of the system on which the flash patch is located
- "password" is the root password where the flash patch is located
- change root password before, then change back after doing this (for security)
- you can, of course, use any other account and password that has access to the firmware image
The example shows "all" and "rtos" done in one command (they can be done separately).
