Goal

The intent of this document is to provide the reader with an overview of how the Sun SPARC External I/O Expansion Unit device paths are arranged.

Solution

The Sun SPARC External I/O Expansion Unit provides additional I/O HBA slots to the server to which the unit is attached.

There are two types of expansion  boats  that can be used in the Sun SPARC  External I/O Expansion Unit:

Expansion of 1 Server PCIe slot to 6 PCIe slots via the PCIe boat

Expansion of 1 Server PCIe slot to 6 PCI/PCI-X slots via the PCI-X boat

In order to understand the Sun SPARC  External I/O Expansion Unit Device Paths, it is helpful to have a high level understanding of the unit's architecture, which is graphically represented as follows:

PCIe boat:

Server's PCIe slot device path, plus:

         |--/pci@0

                   |--pci@1/pci@0

                             |--pci@0  (Slot 1)

                             |--pci@1  (Slot 2)

                             |--pci@9  (Slot 3)

                   |--pci@9/pci@0

                             |--pci@0  (Slot 4)

                             |--pci@1  (Slot 5)

                             |--pci@9  (Slot 6)

PCI/PCI-X boat:

Server's PCIe slot device path, plus:

        |--/pci@0

                   |--pci@1

                             |--pci@0     (Slot 1)

                             |--pci@0,1  (Slot 2)

                   |--pci@9

                             |--pci@0     (Slot 3)

                             |--pci@0,1  (Slot 4)

                   |--pci@8

                             |--pci@0     (Slot 5)

                             |--pci@0,1  (Slot 6)

The same information as represented in the following tables:

PCIe Boat Slot

External I/O Expansion Unit Device Path

Slot 1

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@0

Slot 2

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1

Slot 3

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@9

Slot 4

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@9/pci@0/pci@0

Slot 5

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@9/pci@0/pci@1

Slot 6

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@9/pci@0/pci@9

PCI-X Boat Slot

External I/O Expansion Unit Device Path

Slot 1

[Server's PCIe Slot I/O Device Path plus] .../pci@0/pci@1/pci@0

Slot 2

Actual device paths may be seen using some of the following methods:

OBP:   show-devs  command

Solaris:  /etc/path_to_inst  file

Solaris:   prtpicl  command

Solaris:   prtdiag -v  command
