Goal

This document gives the procedures to configure and unconfigure a disk as a global spare using the Sun Storage 3000 Family CLI 2.x commands.

Solution

Below are the steps needed in sccli to list disks and configure an unassigned (or FRMT) disk as a global spare, and then how to unconfigure it.

Execute the command sccli>show disks to list the available disks. In the below example the new disk at CH2 ID11 with status FRMT will be used as a global spare.

sccli> show disks
Ch  Id      Size   Speed  LD     Status   IDs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2   6  232.88GB   200MB  ld1    ONLINE   HITACHI HDS7225SASUN250G A6DA

2   9  232.88GB   200MB  ld1    ONLINE   HITACHI HDS7225SASUN250G A6DA

2  11  232.88GB   200MB  NONE   FRMT     HITACHI HDS7225SASUN250G A6DA
S/N VNRJ9HC6CTH1DM

To configure the disk at CH2 ID11 as a global spare, run the command sccli> configure global-spare 2.11 as shown below:

sccli> configure global-spare 2.11

 sccli> show disks
Ch  Id      Size   Speed  LD     Status   IDs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

S/N VNRJ9HC6CTH1DM

At this point we have configured disk at CH2 ID11 as a global spare. To unconfigure the global spare disk, run the command sccli> unconfigure global-spare 2.11 as shown below:

sccli> unconfigure global-spare 2.11

sccli> show disks
Ch  Id      Size   Speed  LD     Status   IDs

S/N VNRJ9HC6CTH1DM

After the execution of unconfigure command, the disk at CH2 ID11 comes back to FRMT status and can now be assigned as a local spare, global spare or data disk. Refer to Sun StorEdge 3000 Family CLI 2.5 User’s Guide for more details related to sccli commands.
