Goal

This document provides some basic guidelines for the cabling and configuration between two Sun Storage 3310 or 3320 Arrays in a two-node Sun Cluster.

Solution

Considerations

  • Each node can only have one connection to each array. (There are not enough ports on the array.)
  • With only a single connection, you cannot use multipathing.
  • Redundancy is achieved with host-based mirroring of all logical disks between each 3310 array.
  • Either Solaris Volume Manager (SVM) or Veritas Volume Manger (VxVM) may be used to mirror the logical disks.

Cabling

  • An array without a JBOD expansion tray may be configured as a single- or dual-bus configuration.
  • An array with a JBOD expansion tray must be configured in a single-bus configuration.
  • See Chapter 4 of the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation, and Service Manual for examples of single- and dual-bus configurations.
  • Ports 1 and 3 on the I/O module of each array must be configured as host ports.
  • Each node will have a path to each array. In simplest terms:
    • Node1, pci port 1 will connect to array-A, host channel port 1
    • Node1, pci port 2 will connect to array-B, host channel port 1
    • Node2, pci port 1 will connect to array-A, host channel port 3
    • Node2, pci port 2 will connect to array-B, host channel port 3

Configuration

  • No change to the SCSI initiators is required.  Unlike other SCSI cluster configurations, the HBA's do not share a common bus.
  • The configuration on each array must be identical.
  • Specifically, every Logical Disk Partition on array-A, must have an identical, equivalent sized, Logical Disk Partition on array-B.
  • Logical Disks must be mapped to both host ports, (1 and 3) on each array.
  • Every disk which shows up on the cluster node needs to be mirrored to its appropriate, identical counterpart.
  • You are now ready to add the SVM or VxVM mirror to the cluster configuration.
