Goal

Certain Solaris[TM] Operating System(OS) and Open Boot PROM(OBP) versions are required, when using specific CPU/Memory Modules within the Sun Fire[TM] V490V and V890 server platforms. The latest firmware is always the prefered firmware. The latest firmware version download and instructions can be found at:

Solution

To ensure stable operation of SunFire V490 and SunFire V890 Sun Servers, the following minimum Solaris OS and OBP Firmware versions are required, when utilizing 1050 MHz, 1200 MHz, and 1350 MHz UltraSPARC IV CPU/Memory Modules (Jaguar), as well as 1500 MHz and 1800 MHz UltraSPARC IV+ CPU/Memory Modules (Panther). Solaris 11 or higher is not suported on this platform.

To verify that the proper version of the operating system is installed, examine the /etc/release file. It should contain the text Solaris X X/XX or identify a Solaris OS release that is compatible with the Sun Fire V490 / V890 systems.

Within the Solaris Environment, enter:

    # /usr/sbin/prtconf -V

Or alternatively, from the ok prompt, enter:

    ok .version

Notes
1. The minimum V490 and V890 OS is Solaris 9 9/05, or Solaris 10 3/05 HW1.
2. Sun Fire V490 and V890 OBP >=4.18 Version 1 is required.
3. Sun Fire V890 System Board 501-7199 is required.
4. Sun Fire V890 System Board 501-6771 is not supported.
5. Option X7273A-KIT includes an 8GB 1500MHz USIV+ and System Board 501-7199.
6. Option X7274A-KIT includes a 16GB 1500MHz USIV+ and System Board 501-7199.
