Goal

This document explains how to replace a failed (or expired) battery on a Sun StorEdge 3310 SCSI Array, 3320 SCSI Array, 3510 FC Array, or 3511 SATA Array. Refer to Chapter 4, Battery Fru, of the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family FRU Installation Guide.

Solution

Steps to Follow

1. Look at the battery LED before proceeding with replacement. The battery LED, is located on the controller module. There are 3 possible LED patterns.

GREEN

BLINKING GREEN

AMBER

battery is fully charged

battery charging

battery bad or missing

2. Review the battery status in the telnet/tip interface as described in the Battery Status on Initial Firmware Screen of the Sun StorEdge 3000 Family FRU Installation Guide.

3. For the 3510 FC or 3511 SATA array, check the status using the show battery-status command from the sccli interface.

sccli> show battery-status
 Upper Battery Type: 1
 Upper Battery Manufacturing Date: Tue Aug 12 12:41:24 2008
 Upper Battery Placed In Service:    Mon Sep 10 04:00:00 2008
 Upper Battery Expiration Date:      Sat Aug 12 06:41:24 2010
 Upper Battery Expiration Status:    Expired


 Lower Battery Type: 1
 Lower Battery Manufacturing Date: Mon Mar 31 00:00:00 2008
 Lower Battery Placed In Service:    Wed Apr  8 04:00:00 2008
 Lower Battery Expiration Date:      Thu Mar 31 18:00:00 2010
 Lower Battery Expiration Status:    Expired

 

Status values include:

  • Good.  

  • Expired  - Replace battery.

  • Warning - indicates that the battery will expire within 21 days; Replace the battery.

 

4. To replace the battery in a 3310 and 3320 SCSI Arrays, follow the FRU Replacement procedure for Replacing a SCSI Battery.

5. To replace the battery in a 3510-FC or 3511-SATA Array, follow the FRU Replacement procedure for Replacing an FC Battery.

6. For the 3510-FC or 3511-SATA array, set the in-service date via the sccli command, show battery -u. See  FC Battery Status and In-Service Date. Example below.

sccli> show battery-status -u
 Upper Battery Type: 1
 Upper Battery Manufacturing Date: Mon Feb  2 08:00:00 2004
 Upper Battery Placed In Service:  Wed Aug 11 20:18:02 2004
 Upper Battery Expiration Date:    Fri Aug 11 20:18:02 2006
 Upper Battery Status: good

The date 2004/9/29 will be stored as the In-Service Date of Lower Battery.

 Lower Battery Type: 1
 Lower Battery Manufacturing Date: Tue Mar 30 14:32:26 2004
 Lower Battery Placed In Service:  Wed Sep 29 21:04:39 2004
 Lower Battery Expiration Date:    Fri Sep 29 21:04:39 2006
 Lower Battery Status: good
